  • Undergraduate Students - Apple Mac Users and essay submissions

Guidance Updated 5.15pm Friday 11 May

Update - we have installed on our HELIOS server some software to clean infected documents on submission so these should now be submitted successfully - please note that if you are/have experienced this issue you are strongly advised to take adequate steps to ensure your computer has been disinfected.

The guidance and advice issued below will remain applicable until we are sure that the issue has been successfully resolved for all users - Nadeem

A large number of Apple Mac users have been infected with the Flashback trojan virus (and this also applies to any other virus infected document) - HELIOS/Turnitin will reject these infected documents and prevent submission of your essay (albeit with a very cryptic error message).

You may solve this in a number of ways

    1) Install the latest Apple updates to remove the Trojan

    2) Save your file as a PDF file format (this is possible via www.zamzar.com)

    3) Use a different computer to submit your work (College computing facilities are open until 22.30)

If you cannot do this then the College has decided in these circumstances ONLY to exceptionally allow the following as an alternative

    1) Do NOT under any circumstance email your submission to your teacher

    2) Please send an email with the error message that begins with "Coding error detected, it must be fixed by a programmer" to the email address below ONLY together with your attached essay. The deadline still applies.

    Undergraduate Students

Friday 11 May - End of Year Essays

Please remember to leave plenty of time to submit your end of year essays. You are NOT allowed to submit after the 23.00 deadline - the submission points will close automatically - and its the time as measured by the HELIOS/Turnitin computers that counts!

You should allow a minimum of 15-20 minutes per essay.

Monday 14 May - this is the deadline for UG Dissertations/Projects - the same advice applies.

Postgraduate End-of-Year Essay and Dissertation submission information

Postgraduate End-of-Year Essay and Dissertation submission information

All essay and dissertation submission points are now open on and will close at 3.00pm on the deadline dates.

DEADLINE

The submission deadlines are also published in the MA Programme Handbooks as well as in the Quick Postgraduate Guide:

- All end-of year essays must be submitted by Monday 11th June 2012.

- Dissertations are due either by 11th June 2012 (for part-time students in their third year or beyond) or by 3rd September 2012 (for one-year full-time students and part-time students in their second year). If the dissertation is a deferral or a resubmission from last year, in these cases students have been officially informed about their deadlines.

The closing time on HELIOS is strictly 3.00pm and no submissions will be accepted once it has passed. The time of 3.00pm is as measured by the HELIOS computer and the submission points will close automatically, therefore you should allow sufficient time (at least 15 minutes per piece) to complete your submission.

COVERSHEET

Please ensure that your work is complete and you have included the correct coversheet:

- The completed 'PG-Level7-Essay and Dissertation Coversheet' must be the first page in the document. The coversheet is available here (please click).
- You must NOT put your name on any part of your submitted work; only use your Student ID number on the coversheet and pages.
- Students who have a special education need (e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia) that they have notified the College about MUST contact Dominic McLoughlin [d.mcloughlin@heythrop.ac.uk], the Student Development Manager, for their coversheet (the same way as they needed a special coversheet for their coursework submissions during the year).
- If the essay or dissertation is a deferral or a resubmission from last year, you must indicate this on the coversheet.

SUBMISSION

While uploading your work on Helios, in the 'Submission Title' box you must ONLY put your Student ID.

All submissions must be made via HELIOS - do not email your work to your supervisor as this will not be accepted. If you experience difficulties while submitting your work, please contact the Help Desk on help@heythrop.ac.uk (please remember that the Help Desk only accepts emails sent from College email accounts!).
